The upsurge in hostilities between the Ukrainian forces and the Russian Army in eastern Ukraine has put cities like Mariupol, partially occupied by Russian forces, on the brink of a cholera epidemic , as well as outbreaks of other diseases such as dysentery. .

Data from the United Nations indicate that the war unleashed by Russia on Ukrainian soil has caused between three and four million people to need medication throughout the country , while another fifteen million people require psychological support to deal with the consequences caused by the conflict.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has pointed out that the health situation in Mariupol is especially alarming due to the lack of drinking water and medical supplies in the south of the town , which is under Russian occupation.

Likewise, the latest data collected by British Intelligence indicates that access to drinking water is inconsistent and that communications continue to be seriously affected in the areas occupied by Russia since the beginning of the war.

"Medical services in Mariupol are about to collapse and an outbreak of cholera would worsen the situation ," the Defense Ministry said in its latest war report. Ukraine suffered a severe cholera epidemic in 1995 and has experienced small outbreaks since then, especially in the coastal area facing the Azov Sea, where Mariupol is located.

Ukrainian authorities estimate that thousands of people, including children, have been killed in Mariupol, while more than a thousand Ukrainian military personnel have been captured in the city and transferred to Russia. Added to this is the shortage of medicines in the Kherson region, which is also located in southern Ukraine, although Russia is focusing its efforts on advancing in the city of Severodonetsk, in Lugansk province.

"Russia is gaining control of the city but its forces have not made much progress in recent times in encircling the area to the north and south," British Defense said. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, 4,266 people have died and another 5,178 have been injured , according to the latest balance from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, which has warned that these figures could be much higher.

After more than 100 days of war, there is a growing danger of global food insecurity, which has led international organizations to call for grain and fertilizer exports from Russian and Ukrainian territory to be guaranteed.

To this end, the UN has urged to ensure the transfer of these products through Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea , although it has insisted that the export from Russia is just as important for farmers around the world.
